Poetry: Josiah A.R. Cox
Language: English
Duration: c. 4:45
The text for New Earth came from my friend and Baltimorean poet Josiah A.R. Cox. The text is a tightly-constructed depiction of the eschaton, and I was immediately taken by its vibrant imagery and the musical atmosphere it conjured.

TEXT
NEW EARTH
Nevermore now
noon nor butane moon;
yet our great host of shadows grows
as if smoke from singeing wheat—frankincense
for Thine forever golden heat,
burning closer darkness
nevermore now.
(Revised version, 2022)
Author’s Note:
The Bible culminates with the Apostle John’s paradoxical vision of all creation recreated: heaven is a new earth; the temple of the Lord is the Lord; there is a flowing river but no sea; and there is no sun nor moon but neither night. This poem imagines a multitude of people gathered like a field to welcome that mystery.
